Fleet 71 Summer #2: One-Design Regatta Write-Up

The second of two Summer OD Regattas for Fleet 71 was held Sunday, August 20th.

The day saw the fleet tearing around Hampton Roads harbor in perfect J-24 racing conditions at 14-16 knots out of the southwest. The top two finishers, David Taylor in Midmorning Buzz and Mike Veraldi in Quicky were separated by a mere one point in the final standings after 4 races.

On a day where the racing was extremely close, all participants flip flopping in the standings and the conditions comfortably challenging, the barefooted guys and gals handling the boats in the 2 -3 foot chop got a real workout. "We definitely could have used another person on the rail," one skipper opined.

RESULTS:
1. David Taylor, Midmorning Buzz (2-4-1-1=8)
2. Mike Veraldi, Quicky (1-2-3-3 = 9)
3. Alan Bomar, Roundabout (4-1-2-4 = 11)
4. Matt Haskell, Dutch Courage (3,3,4,2 = 12)

Fleet 71 Summer #2: One-Design Regatta Sunday, August 20th
The second of two Summer OD Regattas for Fleet 71 will be held Sunday, August 20th.

The Fleet will race on the Hampton Flats consistent with the Notice of Race (previously published in the CCV Book). A current J/24 measurement certificate is not required so all local boats are encouraged to attend. The entry fee as discussed in the NOR is payable to HYC for those who have not paid earlier in the year. Skippers meeting will be @ 0930 on Sunday @ the HYC 5-ton hoist. John McCarthy and team have agreed to be our Race Committee.

Any boats on the fence and in need of crew can call David Taylor (speedy_racing@hotmail.com) for a helping hand. There is no other racing this weekend and a number of good PHRF racers are interested in hoping on board a J-24 to try out some real one design sailing. The earlier you call the more likely additional crew can be found.

Fleet 71 Summer #1: One-Design Regatta Write-Up

The first of two Summer OD Regattas for Fleet 71 was held Saturday, July 8th.

Participants included Roundabout, Midmorning Buzz and Dutch Courage. Results pretty much reflected that list with Alan Bomar’s Roundabout getting straight bullets, Midmorning Buzz taking seconds and Dutch Courage finishing out the pack. At least we all beat Quicky.

Fleet 71 Summer #1: One-Design Regatta Saturday, July 8th

The first of two Summer OD Regattas for Fleet 71 will be held Saturday, July 8th.

The Fleet will race on the Hampton Flats consistent with the Notice of Race (previously published in the CCV Book). John McCarthy and team have agreed to be our Race Committee. We have the opportunity to have 7 boats on the line. Current commitment is from roundabout, Dutch Courage and Midmorningbuzz (who is coming off the hot win at Southern Bay Race Week). We also expect to have Quicky show although we are waiting a confirmation. Other prospects include; Blue Bus w/ Chris Johnson, Donna Girl w/ Jack Herbert and High Noon w/ Patrick Ryan.

Any boats on the fence and in need of crew can call David Taylor (speedy_racing@hotmail.com). There is no other racing this weekend and a number of good PHRF racers are interested in hoping on board a J-24 to try out some real one design sailing. Black Seal Cup Southern Bay Race Week 2005
The 2006 J/24 District 6 Championship began June 2-4 at the Black Seal Cup in Hampton Roads, Virginia.

Racing started over the Willoughby Bank in the Southern Chesapeake Bay in 10 -18 knots. The day ended with the last race witnessing the entire fleet separated by a mere 41 seconds and only 7 seconds between 2nd place Midmorning Buzz and 5th place Thin Ice. The comment from the surrounding PHRF fleet was, "now THAT is One-Design racing." David Taylor in Midmorning Buzz won the 1st day with a 1-2.

The second day saw a range of conditions and drizzling rain with shifty winds ranging from 0 to 10 knots for most of the day but still saw some great competition. The last race again showed some spectacular finishes and upsets. Midmorning Buzz all but had race 4 wrapped up with a huge lead only to watch roundabout coming screaming from left and behind to take the lead just before the last leg.

Ironically half way through the last leg the fleet encountered a huge 180 wind shift and wind speeds increasing from less than 10 to upwards of 25 knots. An upwind drag race between roundabout and Midmorning Buzz finished the day off with Midmorning just edging out roundabout for 1st place in race 4. The final standings after day 2 saw Quicky & Dutch Courage - tied for 3rd and Midmorning Buzz solidifying her position in 1st place but clearly not becoming untouchable.

The third day was met with light air and sunshine. Race 5 of the 3-day series showed Midmorning Buzz's lead shrink to roundabout. This was followed by race 6 being sailed in drifting conditions and a strong current. In this race, roundabout got the win over Midmorning Buzz but a "never say die" attitude gave Midmorning Buzz a series win by 1 point.

In hindsight the scoring that decided regatta was race 2 on the first day with four J/24s separated by seven seconds. Rearrange that finish and the regatta is rearranged. That is the thrill and excitement of J-24 One-Design Racing.

The final standings were:

1 3800 MIDMORNING BUZZ TAYLOR 12.00
2 85 ROUNDABOUT BOMAR 13.00
3 4049 QUICKY VERALDI 19.00
4 3547 DUTCH COURAGE HASKELL 21.00
5 3733 THIN ICE WENSELL 25.00

CCV Spring Series
